Albemarle to acquire Rhodia's phosphorous-based flame retardants business for polyurethane applications. (News).(Brief Article)

AS PART OF ITS strategy to divest noncore businesses and reduce debt, Rhodia SA has agreed to sell to Albemarle Corp. its global organo-phosphorus and ammonium polyphosphate flame retardants (FR) business for applications in rigid and flexible polyurethane foams. The deal, which is still subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close within the next three to six weeks.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but a Rhodia official characterizes the deal as "a significant disposal." Sales of these Rhodia products in 2002 were estimated at $65 million.

Rhodia's business for FRs used in polynrethanes employs about 90 people and has a production site in Avonmouth, UK. These assets will transfer to Albemarle. The Avonmouth site also produces...
