THE SPECIALTY materials business of Honeywell is seeing double-digit annual growth for Spectra, its extended-chain polyethylene fiber. Spectra is 10 times stronger than steel on a pound-for-pound basis and is widely used in ropes, sails, fishing lines and hand-protection garments. The product is also being used for protective body armor and is credited with greatly reducing deaths and casualties in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
