AS THE Senate resumed debate on omnibus energy legislation last week, the chemical industry joined other businesses in urging lawmakers to oppose any amendments that would "exacerbate the growing supply-demand gap" in the natural gas market. In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), the American Chemistry Council (ACC) and five other trade groups said that as a result of declining production, tight supplies and record price increases, US manufacturers are facing a crisis in natural gas.

"Yet some senators are proposing permanent restrictions on producing clean-burning, environmentally friendly natural gas, while others are refusing to even allow a study of how much natural gas our nation may possess," the ACC noted. An...
