Gilead Sciences gains FDA approval for Emtriva. (Life Sciences).

GILEAD SCIENCES Inc. has received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for Emtriva (emtricitabine), an antiretroviral. Estimates for Emtriva as a co-formulated product with Gilead's first HIV drug Viread (tenofovir) top $1 billion, upon a projected launch in 2005.

The FDA approved Emtriva to treat HIV infection in adults in combination with other antiretrovirals. Emtriva is available to wholesalers at an annual price of roughly $3,034, on par with GlaxoSmithKline PLC'S (GSK) Epivir (lamivudine), a competing nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor.
