PRESIDENT GEORGE W Bush has appointed Marianne Lamont Horinko acting administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a position she could hold for as long as seven months while the White House searches for a permanent replacement for Christie Whitman.

Ms. Horinko, the assistant administrator for solid waste and emergency response since 2001, replaces Linda Fisher, the agency's former deputy administrator who briefly replaced Ms. Whitman, who resigned effective June 27. Ms. Fisher left the agency on July 11.

Stephen Johnson, a 20-year EPA veteran who most recently served as assistant administrator of the office of prevention, pesticides and toxic substances, was selected to serve as the EPA'S acting deputy administrator.
