JOHNSON & Johnson (J&J) posted solid second quarter results, with underlying earnings up 15 percent to $2.1 billion based on a 14 percent increase in sales to $10.3 billion. Worldwide pharmaceutical sales accounted for $4.9 billion of that total, a 15 percent improvement compared to the second quarter of 2002.

The strong performance in pharmaceuticals was lend by robust growth from the schizophrenia drug Risperdal (risperidone), up 16 percent to $390 million; the rheumatoid arthritis drug Remicade (infliximab), which increased 23 percent to $366 million; and the anti-epileptic Topomax (topiramate), up 87 percent to $205 million.
