SEC dodges leveraged buyout issue.

WASHINGTON (FNS) -- Despite concern expressed by several of its commissioners about the proliferation of leveraged buyouts, the Securities and Exchange Commisiion is not pressing Congress to regulate this type of takeover.

The leveraged buyout is notably absent from the Tender Offer Reform Act of 1984 now under consideration by a House subcommittee. An advisory committee on tender offers appointed by the SEC to recommend legislation on takeovers sidesteped the LBO issue, concentrating instead on "golden parachute" termination agreements, "greenmail" (the repurchase of stock to head off takeovers) and other issues, according to SEC chief economist Greg A. Jarrell, who served on the committee.
