SAN FRANCISCO -- Wilkes BAshford paid the city $461,351.70 this week in back rent he owes, an amount he raised with the help of three co-signers.

City attorney George Agnost said the payment represents rent owed for 1982 and 1983 plus 10 per cent interest. Since Bashford has also paid his rent for 1984 and the current year, "this would obviate default for failure to pay rent. You can't evict someone when they've paid their rent," Agnost said, adding the payment has guaranteed that Bashford can stay in his 375 Sutter Street store located in the city-owned Sutter-Stockton Garage until at least July 1986, when his current lease expires.
