Men's wear business still 'tough': Macy's president. (Mark S. Handler)

NEW YORK -- Men's wear continues to be a "tough" category at R. H. Macy & Co., and although Macy's men's business in total in running ahead of last year, many segments of it continue to post disappointing results, Mark S. Handler, president and chief operating officer, said Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference before the firm's annual meeting, Handler said the clothing business has shown some life, but basic furnishings and much of men's designer sportswear continue to be difficult. "I don't know if it's a lack of innovation on the part of manufacturers, but it's into the second year now that the (men's) business has been difficult," Handler said.
