Like men's wear in general, Santa Claus' costume has changed quite a bit since Clement C. Moore wrote "A Visit From St. Nicholas" in 1822. Modern Santas, as typified by Macy's 1985 model, are considerably more dapper. For example, Macy's Santa would never--ever--appear covered in ashes and soot.

"We designed and built the most elegant Santa costume imaginable," says Jean McFaddin, Macy's vice-president/director of special productions. Scorning what she calls "the standard Santa look," McFaddin supervised a re-design of Santa's suit five years ago.
