Textiles Foreign Policy "Sweetener'

The U.S. Government is using textiles and apparel as a "sweetener' in dealings with foreign governments, the new president of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute (ATMI) said Thursday at the annual convention of the Alabama Textile Manufacturers Association (ATMA), here.

Dewey Trogdon, ATMI president and chief executive officer of Cone Mills Corp., Greensboro, N.C., said "Thanks to a government trade policy that has become an instrument to dismantle the manufacturing base of the U.S., 300,000 textile and apparel jobs have been lost since 1980.'
