Derrick Defends ATMI Method on Import Penetration Stats WASHINGTON (FNS) -- Rep. Butler Derrick (D., S.C.), responding to a challenge issued by the chairman of the House Trade Subcommittee, this week defended the American Textile Manufacturers Institute's method of compiling import-penetration figures for the domestic textile and apparel markets.

In a letter sent Tuesday to subcommittee chairman Sam Gibbons (D., Fla.), Derrick argued that discrepancies between ATMI's statistics and those compiled by the Department of Commerce cannot be blamed on "double counting," as Gibbons had charged during textile bill hearings.
