Players' Strike Cuts Into Retail Sales of NFL Logo Apparel

It may only be a short while before the players and fans forget the bitterness of the strike and get back to the business of football, but for retailers that carry licensed National Football League activewear, the effects of the walkout could be felt for some time to come.

Stores surveyed by DNR in the Northeast and Midwest reported as much as a 50 percent drop in sales of licensed apparel, but generally were hopeful that sales would get a boost following the settlement, particularly with the holiday buying season just around the corner.

The retailers, who do $400 million annually in sales of licensed NFL goods, considered themselves fortunate in that the players' walkout didn't last...
