Ad Men Subtract Points From Yule Store Catalogs NEW YORK--Millions are spent by department stores each year to create, produce and mail their Christmas catalogs -- certainly one of the surest ways of bringing in the pluses during holiday selling.

Even with the waves of mergers and buyouts among department stores this past year, they still put their best foot forward on paper.

The slick catalog pages are alive with countless gifts, goodies and gadgets to lure shoppers into the store or to order by mail. As a direct marketing tool, they're designed to bring a bit of the store into a customer's home -- to strengthen the store's image -- and for proliferating branch stores, literally to introduce a nameplate to a new area.
