ALL MANHATTAN SALES STAFF AT BLOOMIE's ON COMMISSION

NEW YORK -- In what has been described as a landmark step in efforts to improve customer service, Bloomingdale's has negotiated and signed a labor contract that includes a provision allowing the entire Manhattan sales staff to be paid on a commission rather than an hourly basis.

The agreement, ratified at the weekend by the membership of Local 3 of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, AFLCIO, covers about 1,500 sales people among the 4,000 full and part-time employees under the contract in the New York flagship. The rest are office, clerical and warehouse workers.
