MAKERS SEEK MORE PLAYING TIME IN ATHLETIC FIELD

NEW YORK -- Activewear collections are narrower and deeper for spring 1990 as manufacturers look for optimum positioning in the athletic market.

Among the key trends:

* A greater emphasis on technical features;

* Importance of retail brand impact;

* Strong business in warmups, windwear and bottoms;

* A market shift away from Lycra spandex and into other nylon fabrics;

* Rich colors with neon accents.
