SALAD DAYS FOR GARDEN COLORS

NEW YORK -- Garden colors, especially olive and mustard, are the key ingredients for fall best sellers, according to better specialty and department stores.

After a slow start at the registers, retailers report fall sales are taking off with print shirts doing best. Other sellers include:

* Leather jackets,

* Vests,

* And basic pant styles, especially chinos.

"Vegetable colors, especially in sportswear and accessories, are doing phenomenally well," says Nancy Amoroso owner of Dimensions, Philadelphia. "They're fresh and innovative and they're not as loud as last spring's colors."
