Custom Tailor's Dream Comes True

NEW YORK - For Vincenzo Sanitate, it's a dream come true. Ever since setting foot on American soil from his native Italy in 1956, the custom tailor had hoped to open his own retail store. Now, 33 years later, Sanitate Tailors & Shirtmakers has debuted at 27 West 55th Street in New York.

"This has always been my dream," he said. "I've been waiting for this for many years."

Sanitate began learning his trade at an early age. When he was 10 years old, he apprenticed with his uncle in Florence, before attending Artigiamato Fiorentino, an art and design school where he mastered pattern making. A year later, he set sail on the final ill-fated voyage of the Andrea Doria on route to America.
