UNIFORMS IN STEP WITH DEFENSE CUTS

WASHINGTON (FNS) -- The manufacturing of weapons isn't the only place that has been scaled back in President Bush's proposed 1991 Defense Department budget.

Buying of textiles and apparel would also feel the pinch and be reduced by about $43 million, which is comparatively little considering that the agency would still spend $857 million to outfit its troops, according to Defense Supply Agency officials.

But with Congress poised to make deep cuts in the Administration's request for an overall $295 billion Defense Department budget for 1991, further reductions in funding for military uniforms and related equipment are expected next year.
