THE NEW FAMILY ROBINSON

NEW YORK - When Bidermann Industries launched Bill Robinson's first men's wear collection in 1986, the marketplace was ripe for another big name American designer. But something went wrong along the way.

Together, Bidermann and Robinson made a lot of retailers a lot of money when Robinson designed Calvin Klein (then with Bidermann) and Yves Saint Laurent. And with Robinson's keen sense of American sportswear, Bidermann's good retail track record, and the unexpected death of the rising star in men's wear, Perry Ellis, the timing seemed right for the launch of another lucrative label.
