CPSC GETS TOUGH ON KIDS COTTON PJs

WASHINGTON (FNS) -- The Consumer Product Safety Commission soon will send investigators into department stores nationwide looking for all-cotton garments illegally being sold as children's sleepwear, an agency official said.

The government also will be investigating apparel manufacturers and importers who, like retailers, could be fined up to $5,000 for each illegal garment seized, said Robert Poth, director of the agency's regulatory management division.

"Some manufacturers are making (children's) daywear to look very similar to sleepwear, which is very confusing to consumers," according to CPSC chairman Jacqueline Jones-Smith.
