NEW YORK (FNS)--Responding to press reports, R.H. Macy & Co. chairman and chief executive officer Edward S. Finkelstein said Thursday that he won't retire for several years, but if necessary would recommend the current president Mark Handler succeed him.

In an internal memo, the Macy's chief commented that published reports asserting that a new contract given vice-chairman Myron (Mike) E. Ullman, 3d, put Ullman in line to succeed Finkelstein were misleading.

Finkelstein said the issue was essentially moot since h would continue to head the retailer through its Chapter 11 reorganization "and beyond." Handler currently is president and chief merchandising officer.
