Russell eyes $1.3 billion sales mark.

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. -- Russell Corp. plans to hit $1.3 billion in sales in five years, its top official said Wednesday.

At Russell's annual meeting here Wednesday, Eugene Gwaltney, chairman, told stockholders that the company has begun to formulate a five-year plan that will catapult the $800 million activewear company over the $1 billion mark by the year 2000.

Russell Corp. is off to a good start. First-quarter sales, as reported last week, were up 29 percent, but, more important, profits quadrupled. In the quarter ended April 5, the T-shirt and activewear maker earned $15,327,000, or 37 cents a share, compared with $3,103,000, or 8 cents, a year earlier. Sales rose to $196,162,000 from $152,282,000.
