NEW YORK -- Barbara Hammer has joined Barneys New York as vice-president/general manager of its Chicago store, which is scheduled to open in September.

Hammer's position is newly created.

She will be responsible for overseeing all store activities and report to John Hoeller, senior vice-president, director of stores, at Barneys New York.

Hammer was president of the Hammer Co., Chicago, a management/marketing firm she formed in 1991.

She will retain ownership of the company, but it will operate under the direction of a new executive to be appointed.

Previously, Hammer worked 11 years at Bloomingdale's as regional vice-president, Midwest stores.

She also was general manager of its Chicago store.
