NEW YORK -- Steve Kurtzman and Nick Hilton come from two different worlds, but they have a common goal: Each is out to change his father's clothing business.

Kurtzman, president and chief executive officer, American Fashions, comes from the world of hard-edged California clothing that his father, Mervin, created with LeBaron and Louis Roth.

When his father retired, Kurtzman spent a bundle and completely reengineered his giant factory, European-style. Today, with a stable of contemporary designer and international labels, he has decide to go after still another niche in the market: moderate-priced updated traditional clothing, but with a designer label.
