NEW YORK - Southern Florida retailers hit by Hurricane Andrew stepped up relief efforts to employees on Thursday and were able to reopen more stores.

"We estimate about 1,000 Burdines employees are homeless," said a spokeswoman of Federated Department Stores, Inc., parent company of Burdines.

Reportedly, about 250,000 people in southern Florida were left homeless after the hurricane devastated the area on Monday.

Federated said it was forming the Bloomingdale's and Burdines Victims of Hurricane Andrew Trust Fund seeking contributions from anyone wanting to help associates hurt by the storm.
