NEW YORK (FNS) -- Mark S. Handler officially stepped down Thursday as co-chairman and co-chief executive officer of R.H. Macy & Co., Inc., taking with him an increased $450,000 lifetime pension.

The move gives Myron E. Ullman sole possession of the chairman and chief executive officer positions.

Handler was not scheduled to relinquish those posts until August under the top management changes announced last month.

Although Macy's gave no reason for the speedup, sources close to the store speculated that the company accelerated the move to bolster Ullman's status as the company's key executives head into a long weekend of planning sessions in Florida.
