NEW YORK -- Retail unit volume this Christmas is expected to grow 2.5 percent, including a rise in apparel spending, according to the National Retail Federation.

The NRF forecast, based on a study by Management Horizons, is for non-auto retailing and excludes expected inflation of 1.5 percent. In dollar terms, retail sales would thus grow 4 percent from now until Christmas. Dropping gasoline prices, low interest rates, rising home sales and falling unemployment claims were seen as positive signs.

Spending on apparel is growing, the report said, due to pent-up demand developed during the recession, a modest rise in prices and a growth in population of consumers in their teens and early 20s.
