Retailers of licensed team apparel have dropped baseball merchandise in favor of National Football League products as football season gets underway. The Major League Baseball players strike is expected to most seriously affect national retailers rather than regional firms. A J. C. Penney Co source expected sales of licensed baseball merchandise to decline by single digits in the event of a prolonged strike. The players' strike occurred in late Aug, when retailers usually phase out baseball merchandise to make room for football items.
