Apparel specialty store sales fell .5% in Jan 1995 compared to December, according to the Commerce Dept. There has been a slump in specialty store sales since Feb, 1993, leading some industry analysts to conclude that the demographic shifts of the US population may be to blame. Aging baby boomers and young families, two growing categories, could be more attracted to department stores than other age groups.

WASHINGTON (FNS) -- Apparel specialty stores continued to lose ground in January, with sales falling 0.5 percent against December. This compared to gains of 1.1 percent for general merchandisers and 1.3 percent for department stores, the Commerce Department said Tuesday.
