NEW YORK -- Malden Mills Industries Inc. plans to produce its Polartec fabrics in Germany by the end of this year, company officials said.
Malden, pending final regulatory approvals and with the support of the German Government and local banks, will begin construction of a plant in Gorlitz in March. Gorlitz is an old textile-producing city in the former East Germany, near the Polish border southeast of Berlin.
According to Howard Ackerman, vice-president and Polartec general manager, $80 million will be invested in the operation in three phases. Reached by phone in Germany, Ackerman said that the figure will include financial support from the German government. "We are putting people to work. There is a 15 percent unemployment rate there."
