WASHINGTON (FNS) - John B. Adler, whose family has owned and operated men's tailored clothing shops in Washington since 1943, is liquidating the merchandise at his only remaining store and reportedly is reconfiguring it as a custom tailoring business.

John B. Adler declined to comment.

The downtown unit, on 15th and I streets, apparently is the victim of a Filene's Basement that moved in a few blocks away about two years ago. The Filene's Basement sells Southwick suits, an Adler staple item, for $300 to 400, compared with $650 to $750 at the specialty store, according to a local retail source who did not want his name used.

In addition, men's wear departments at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue all have larger selections than Adler...
