NEW YORK -- Concord Fabrics Inc. said second-quarter earnings rose 28.4 per- cent to $617,772, or 17 cents a share, from $481,188, or 13 cents, a year ago. Sales for the three months ended March 2 dropped 34.1 percent to $25.8 million from $39.2 million. Concord said second-quarter results reflect continued improvement in gross margins and lower operating expenses, which compensated for the reduction in sales.

The company said its strategy, which has tailored its operation to the difficult business climate prevalent in the textile and women's apparel industries, has proved to be "well founded."
