Slacks business booming for May Co. (May Department Stores Co.)

ST. LOUIS -- Men's dress slacks sales at May Department Stores Co. are "explosive," David C. Farrell, chairman and CEO, said following the chain's annual meeting here Friday.

He pointed particularly to items such as those from the Slates division of Levi Strauss & Co. Sales of men's khaki pants also have been strong, the chairman said.

He added, however, that the men's business in general is not quite as robust as women's, but noted that volume is being aided by new colors in dress shirts such as french blues, french grays and purples. He said he observed much of the latter color being worn among the 400 stockholders assembled at America's Center, the St. Louis convention facility.
