The fashion industry lost one of its major creative forces early Tuesday morning when Gianni Versace was gunned down at point blank range on the steps of his palatial villa in the South Beach section of Miami Beach.
The murderer inflicted what were described as "unsurvivable gunshot wounds to the head." An eyewitness to the shooting said the designer was shot twice in the head.
"I believe he was targeted," said Chief Richard Barreto of the Miami Beach Police Department at an early afternoon press conference. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the FBI were also working on the case.
Mayor Alex Penelas of Dade County also said the nature of the killing indicated it was "an extraordinary occurrence and not just random violence." ...
