DALLAS -- Although no lines have yet been drawn in the red-sandy soil of north Texas, the battle of the malls has already begun.

The main clash is currently between Chicago-based General Growth Properties Inc. and Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based Taubman Centers Inc. Both want to build regional malls in the Far North Dallas-Plano/Frisco corridor and have been competing to sign anchor tenants.

Taubman Centers Inc., which plans a center seven miles north of the Dallas Galleria, has obtained signed letters of intent from Dillard's, Foley's, Lord & Taylor and Neiman Marcus. The center is scheduled to open in fall 2001.
