Glenoit to Close Pile Plant.

NEW YORK -- Glenoit Corp., a major producer of pile fabrics for apparel and other industries, will close a large knitting plant and form a division to provide full garment packages to its customers.

A well-known textile executive, Robert E. Kaplan, has joined Glenoit to develop its full garment-package services. Kaplan most recently was president of the denim division of Greenwood Mills.

Glenoit's president, Tom O'Gorman, said the company intends to permanently close its pile knitting facility in Jacksboro, Tenn., on May 31. He said the decision to close the plant resulted from "increased competition from cheaper foreign imports, mostly from Asia, including finished pile garments."
