DUPONT CUTS FIBER WORK FORCE BY 2,000; BLAMES WEAKENING U.S. TEXTILE AND APPAREL MARKETS.

NEW YORK -- DuPont, in what it billed as a "further alignment" of its resources, said it will lay off more than 4,000 workers, 50 percent of which are in textile fibers. It will also drop about 1,300 contract personnel and shut down "less competitive" fiber-manufacturing facilities.

The company said it was responding to weakening business conditions in the U.S. apparel and textile markets.

Polyester filament and nylon will be the hardest hit, with a loss of 2,000 jobs, mainly in the Camden, S.C., Kinston, N.C., Seaford, Del., and Wilmington, N.C., plants. In addition, there will be layoffs in the Lycra spandex area in the U.S. and Europe "to realize efficiency gains enabled by new technology platforms, which include advanced and more productive...
