While originally launched by brothers Emmett and Donwan Harrell in the spring of 2000 with backing from Dr. Ferruche (Dr. Jay's and Oved Apparel), Akademiks has moved forward recently without Emmett. Market reports say irreconcilable differences led to the business separation but Donwan has easily stepped up to compensate for the loss. Akademiks continues to exhibit cleverly placed pockets, unique cuts and soft brushed-cotton fabrics. The company has a widely targeted consumer base but, interestingly enough, it's the skateboarder crowd that has made this a brand to watch.
