NEW YORK -- J. Crew is staking its claim in the middle of Manhattan's men's wear central.

Last Thursday, the New York-based specialty store chain opened an 8,500-square-foot unit at 347 Madison Avenue on the corner of 45th Street -- directly across the street from Paul Stuart and Brooks Brothers. The store, which is 50 percent men's wear, reflects the company's continuing push to transform itself into a retail chain with a catalog business instead of primarily a catalog house.

Although the company got its start in direct mail and still distributes some 80 million copies of 24 different catalogs annually, it also operates 107 full-price retail stores around the country. Today retail stores generate over 55 percent of the company's business, with...
