I have never been able to relate to that musky world of surf and skate. In fact, my closet is overpowered by the sterile scent of Banana Republic and French Connection. Needless to say, I wasn't feeling too confident about taking the floor at ValSurf in Woodland Hills, Calif., and all I kept thinking was, "How am I going to sell something I wouldn't wear?"

Nonetheless, I put on my only sweatshirt and headed out the door. As I was parking, I was thrown off by the array of cars in the lot: Mercedes, Lexuses and even a Ferrari. Baffled, I proceeded to the door.
