The men's catalogs are coming, the men's catalogs are coming! But instead of just using the same old pretty-boys to model the clothes, Bloomingdale's and Barneys New York stepped outside the box for their spring books this year.

Bloomingdale's used the group Sugar Ray for its denim book, and Barneys turned to "our friends, family and colleagues" for its spring '02 edition.

Kal Ruttenstein, senior vice-president of fashion direction for Bloomingdale's, said, "Denim is a major selling fabric for us at all times, especially spring, and we wanted to position the catalog in a unique way. We have a developed denim customer already and [this catalog] will increase our appeal to a younger customer. Sugar Ray is hot, hip and happening."
