CHANGING TIDES; SURF IS EXPECTED TO STEAL A LITTLE OF SKATE'S SPOTLIGHT AT THE ASR EXPO.

ATLANTA -- When surf and skate retailers go to the Action Sports Retailer (ASR) Trade Expo in Long Beach, Calif., Jan. 23-25, they'll see a lot of vintage and simpler styling. But the biggest theme at ASR, which will be held at the Long Beach Convention Center, will be the continuing resurgence of surf that started last year.

According to manufacturers and retailers, skate is still important in the youth market, but surf is flexing a lot of muscle now. Dick Baker, president of Ocean Pacific, said, "Skate is still a valid part of the show and the youth category, but it's taking more of a back seat [to surf] now." Debbie Harvey, director of merchandise buying for Ron Jon Surf Shop, added, "Skate had explosive growth for a few years and now we're seeing growth...
