FLORENCE -- The snappily dressed fashion flock that descended on Florence for the 63rd Pitti Uomo encountered vendors who were digging in and offering up highly focused lines for a marketplace battered by economic and geopolitical uncertainty.

With that in mind, manufacturers showing here last week turned to the only reliable source they know -- themselves. Call it a return to condensed luxury for fall/winter 2003. Gone are the days of superfluous stock and exaggerated offerings; instead vendors showed trimmed-down, well-thought-out collections. That's not to say expansion wasn't part of their New Year's resolutions, but the warren of show booths and pavilions generated a palpable sense of purpose and recognizable points of view.
