Thom who? Actually, I hadn't heard of him either. That's because Thom Browne is a tailored clothing designer with only one retail customer -- Bergdorf Goodman, where his own shop is set to open in January on the hip third floor. Score one more for Robert Burke, the store's vice-president and senior fashion director.

A fitted gray suit designed by Browne that appeared in The New York Times impressed me immediately. A return to an early Ralph? No way. The lapels were narrow and not a replay of Lauren's revolutionary four-inchers. Was it a take on Prada and Gucci? Uh-uh. The jacket and trousers were cropped even shorter, and the natural shoulders had a subtle roping that looked pure custom and something Sean Connery could have worn as James Bond. I was hooked....
