On a recent weekday visit from headquarters a retail executive walked into one of his stores and heard something he didn't like.

It was stone-cold silence, punctuated by the muted chatter of customers and sales staff. "Where the hell's the music?" the executive demanded of a slightly startled salesclerk who quickly fished out a compilation CD of '70s hits and popped it into a nearby stereo system.

"It creates a whole different vibe," explained the executive, as The Partridge Family launched into "Come On Get Happy" -- which, he added, was being played for camp value and as a means of calling attention to the store's line of vintage apparel.
