As I left the office the other day, I was practically blinded by the former Express store on 34th Street just off Fifth Avenue, which is suddenly ablaze with light, white paint and red-hot young men's and juniors'.
Welcome to the world of high-wattage merchandising. That's what the makeovers on 34th Street are all about.
They also turned up the lights at Macy's Herald Square on the Seventh Avenue side of the second floor. Okay, the overheads aren't as blinding as Express, but the over-the-top lighting is a perfect backdrop for some of the hottest new names in the contemporary business. And if the bright lights don't wake you up, the throb of the techno music in the background at both stores will.
