ATLANTA -- New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. is taking its reputation for technical expertise in footwear and using it to build its fledgling apparel business.

Two years ago the company brought in Jim Howard, a former competitive runner who has worked for Adidas, Nike and a specialty running retailer, as global apparel manager.
