When Joel Madden, lead singer of Good Charlotte, wanted to give the band's new brand, Made Clothing, a shot-in-the-arm three years ago, he came up with a simple solution: He just started wearing it.

It might have seemed out of place amid the extreme-sports and punk-music aficionados at New Jersey's Asbury Park Skate and Surf Festival in April 2001, but sporting the T-shirts and hats got the job done.

"We sold everything in pretty much two days," says Josh Madden, Joel's brother and the label's designer.
