NEW YORK -- The scene outside Escuelita, a subterranean nightclub catering to gay Hispanic men, was one of anxious anticipation on the afternoon of Sept. 9, as a large mob of editors (including Vogue's Anna Wintour), retailers and fashion groupies tried to squeeze their way past the doormen and down the staircase into the Cloak runway show. Clearly, Alexandre Plokhov's presentations for this cutting-edge label -- distributed in just 38 stores worldwide -- have become one of the few hot spots of true men's wear creativity during a New York Fashion Week overwhelmingly centered on women's wear.
Dark and dramatic, with slim, sharp silhouettes, Plokhov's work inevitably calls to mind the Gothic elements of European designers like Hedi Slimane or Raf Simons, but...
